If the man had been within striking distance, Alden might have beaten him senseless. Why didn’t that other captain understand that those 20 miles of gear and 400 hooks were what would support these six men and their families? Oh sure, Alden thought to himself, easy for you to say. Forget the gear. You’re running that nice, big, company-owned ship. You have nothing invested in that operation but a pair of boots . . plenty of money for new gear where you come from. Who’s going to replace my gear?

We rolled deeply to port, buried the port outrigger, and lay there. I pushed the throttle to full ahead and wondered if she would get back on her feet before the next wave attempted to roll us over. It was painful. Every joint creaked and every muscle trembled. The Hannah Boden, sweating and shaking, pulled herself from the ocean’s grasp and back into the upright world, which was just beginning to distinguish itself with a crease of light to the east. Yes, the streak of light was horizontal. I was not aware of Ivan’s entrance, but there he was, holding on and shaking his head.

I have to admit that by this time I was so weary of constant bad news and negativism that I terminated, as gently as I could, the remains of our relationship/friendship. I had no regrets about doing so, and only thought of Alan when Alden brought him up. Alden had ordered the rum and Coke and sat anticipating an answer to his question of what had become of Alan. I didn’t find it strange that he should ask about Alan after so much time had elapsed, as the Dry Dock was Alan’s favorite unwinding spot and George and Tommy were two of his closest friends.
