The child Broteer is made “Venture” by Robertson Mumford who, as the steward of a slave ship from Rhode Island, purchases the six-year-old boy off the coast of Guinea for four gallons of rum and a piece of calico as “his own private venture” (pp. 9–10). Not until the age of thirty-six does Broteer finally obtain his freedom by paying his third master seventy-two pounds, two shillings. It is “an unreasonable price” extracted from many years of unrequited toil. Often accused of a superficial optimism, he explains the connection quite poignantly and from an unexpected direction. His key is the misery in the world that he has seen and experienced. “Let us, then, fellow-citizens, unite with one heart and one mind,” he pleads.
