This crusading sense of cleaning up the streets was not geared exclusively to motion picture exhibition. Both Wichita and Emporia launched vice crusades in the 1910s to eradicate prostitution, drug abuse, and female cigarette smoking from their communities. In late 1913, an Emporia movie house, the Star Theater, was prevented from continuing vaudeville performances due to an injunction by the county attorney. Congregational and Presbyterian ministers, educators, and the City Federation of Women’s Clubs had gotten on the bandwagon and petitioned municipal authorities to investigate the show.
