On the chromatic circle the complementary colour is then the colour located directly across from the primary colour. Seurat used his circle to attain the brightness and luminosity of the palette, of which the Impressionists had nearly achieved. As of the first half of 1884, the artist regularly executed sketches on the Seine, in the park on the island of the Grande Jatte, a little down river from Paris. On small tablets he painted fragments of landscapes, bathers, fishermen and couples strolling.
