Beatrice's new studies began badly. On 7 March 188g, her father had another slight stroke and she found herself once more completely tied to his bedside. Filled with depression, she longed for his death. Even the weight of her spinsterhood seemed a deep burden: 'God knows', she wrote in despair, 'celibacy is as painful to a woman (even from the physical standpoint) as it is to a man- It could not be more painful than it is to a woman' (7 March 188g). She could not work and only found relief when her sister took over from her for a short spell.

I think so. Double-mindedness has run right through- a perpetual struggle between conscience on the one hand and feeling on the other- not had the courage to follow either to the bitter endhence my misery.
